Cummings

Knowledge-intensive teams rely on the task-relevant knowledge held by members to perform effectively. In this article, we focus on critical knowledge, defined as the most influential information, know-how, or feedback that contributes directly to task outcomes. From a social network perspective, the critical knowledge structure in a team can be defined by who shares critical knowledge with whom. In a highly centralized critical knowledge structure, everyone shares critical knowledge with a single person on the team. Alternatively, in a highly decentralized critical knowledge structure, critical knowledge is shared evenly across members of the team. Drawing from small group research and network theory, we theorize about critical knowledge structures in teams and make hypotheses regarding the consequences of centralized critical knowledge structures for executive-rated team performance. Data analyses from a field study of 177 teams in a multinational organization indicate support for our theory that centralized critical knowledge structures are negatively related to executive-rated team performance. Furthermore, the negative relationship is exacerbated when (a) business unit diversity on the team is greater, and (b) critical knowledge shared in the team is exploratory rather than exploitative.

Small Group Research goes mobile!

SGR is now available for Smartphones in a mobile site: m.sgr.sagepub.com. You can quickly access the current issue, online first articles, and the archive.

Small Group Research New Editorial Board Members

Based upon our submissions, SGR continues to expand and internationalize the board while maintaining cross-discipline representation. Small Group Research is planning a special issue containing articles describing such methods and discussing some of the pedagogical issues that can arise in courses of this sort. Note that this issue is not about the use of small groups in courses on other topics. Instead, its focus is on courses about small groups; the methods used to teach such courses might or might not involve group activities.

Although we welcome all submissions, we are especially eager to see empirical papers that include some assessment of how effective your methods were to teaching students about groups.

If you are interested in publishing an article in this special issue, then the first step is to send a brief summary (no more than five pages long, typewritten and double-spaced) to Dr. Richard Moreland, Department of Psychology, 3103 Sennott Square, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. 15260. All summaries should be sent no later than December 31st, 2011. Dr. Moreland will read each summary and identify (in consultation with other members of the journal’s editorial staff) the best submissions. He will then work with the authors of those submissions to produce the articles themselves, which should be ready for publication in early 2013. The final articles may range in length from 20 to 35 pages.

If you have any questions about the special issue, then please feel free to contact Dr. Moreland at cslewis@pitt.edu.

Welcome New Associate Editor Lindy Greer

Please help us in welcoming Lindred Greer as a new Associate Editor of Small Group Research.

And, please help us in thanking Randall Peterson for his excellent service as Associate Editor.

And the winner is - - - - - -

The Best Article Award for 2010-2011 was awarded to:

Christena Cleveland, Jim Blascovich, Cynthia Gangi, and Lucie Finez
When Good Teammates Are Bad: Physiological Threat on Recently Formed Teams
Small Group Research February 2011 42: 3-31

A finalist for this award was also recognized:
Kristin J. There are two important reasons to read this issue. First, this issue presents articles that are developed from research presented at the 2010 INGRoup conference. Second, a new point/counterpoint is in this issue. Point/Counterpoint provides two perspectives on issues salient to group and team researchers. Joe Bonito and Bob Sanders are for the collection of behavioral data, whereas Katherine Reynolds identifies the limitations of behavioral data. Group and team research is generally silent on teams in this context. Emergency teams scale from the neighborhood to widespread institutionalized relief efforts. SAGE calls this OnlineFirst, and Small Group Research's website regularly lists these. In essence, articles become part of the scholarly conversation quicker; thus, scholars can cite these articles earlier. Using APA reference style, these articles are still in press, but they have been assigned doi numbers.

Wonder what a doi number is? It's a method used to identify digital content--in many ways the same as a social security or permanent identification number . . . but in this case, for an article rather than people. doi numbers (notice that I didn't capitalize it) also make finding content online so much easier. Just Google the doi.

In using APA 6th, if an article has a doi number, it should be included as the last part of the reference entry--like this:

Cleveland, C., Blascovich, J., Gangi, C., & Finez, L. (2010). When good teammates are bad: Physiological threat on recently formed teams. Small Group Research, 42, 3-31. doi:10.1177/1046496410386245

Notice (a) doi is lowercase, (b) a colon follows doi, and (c) there is no space after the colon. Finally, do not place a period after the doi.

Creative teams

It's award show season--and obviously vocal groups like Lady Antebellum who took home honors at the Grammys and production teams that win honors at the Golden Globes are goal directed groups of interdependent members. In addition to publishing work currently under way or recently completed, our goal is to stimulate research on team science. As such, this special issue features an extended editorial timeline that will allow authors to submit proposals for research that will be completed during the timeline associated with the special issue.

By asking authors to consider the question, “Where is the team in team science?” the special issue editors seek empirical papers that offer answers to the following issues:

• At what level of analysis can the process and behaviors of team science be investigated?
• What approaches/strategies can be used to assess processes and outcomes of team science, considering the perspective of multiple stakeholders?
• What multi-level approaches are effective for the study of team science?
• How does a particular methodology help accelerate our understanding of how to improve team science?
• What social and behavioral disciplinary knowledge can inform the study of team science?
• What point/counterpoint issues are natural tensions in studying the teams for which innovation in science is their outcome?

We encourage the submission of work from a range of theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary perspectives and both qualitative and quantitative approaches are welcome. Although it is not a requirement, the editors are particularly interested in publishing manuscripts authored by cross-disciplinary teams or those that reflect multi-, inter-, or transdisciplinary perspectives.

Given the importance of disseminating ideas and findings relevant to understanding and improving team science, we welcome manuscripts presented at brief research reports (5 to 10 pages) as well as more traditional length (30 pages).

Timeline:
• Interested authors should submit proposals no longer than 750 words by August 1, 2010.
• Notification to authors by November 1, 2010
• Authors must submit complete manuscripts for consideration no later than June 1, 2011.
• Review by editors and publication revisions completed by September 1, 2011
• Publication of manuscripts February 1, 2012

Proposals should be submitted to Joann Keyton, jkeyton@ncsu.edu. Authors submitting manuscripts to the journal should not simultaneously submit them to another journal, nor should they submit manuscripts that have been published elsewhere in substantially similar form or with substantially similar content. Authors in doubt about what constitutes prior publication should consult one of the co-editors. Submission of a manuscript implies commitment to publish in the journal. SGR uses APA (6th edition) style and formatting.

We strongly encourage potential authors to contact us as at any time to discuss an idea or concept prior to any deadline. Beginning with the February 2011 issue, this style will be used. A couple of things to remember:

1. doi numbers will be required for journal articles. If you retrieve your articles online, a doi is required. (Why? It helps readers quickly and accurately find the article you're citing). The doi number is typically found on the first page of a journal article (top or bottom). Here's an example:

Moreland, R. L. (2010). Are dyads really groups? Small Group Research, 41, 251-267. doi:10.1177/1046496409358618

2. the first printing of the APA 6th manual had errors.
